Paper Abstract:      The use of Learning Management Systems (LMS) has grown considerably in universities around the world, and Portuguese universities are following that trend. The University of Minho has pioneered in this area, and has since 2006 adopted Blackboard as its official LMS. Moodle, on the other hand, has become the standard LMS in secondary schools in Portugal, and has also been used in the University of Minho in scattered initiatives. This paper presents the results of a survey of University of Minho students’ perceptions of both Blackboard and Moodle. Although Blackboard is globally preferred, Moodle’s features are better assessed. On the whole, LSMs are used to a low level of engagement, but some instances of Mode 2 utilization can be detected, especially in courses adopting Moodle.
